Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Hakujo Fukuryu is a unique cultivar renowned for its distinct appearance and cultural significance in Japanese horticulture. Translating to “white phoenix dragon,” it embodies themes of renewal and prosperity in Japanese tradition.
This cultivar is a result of crossbreeding between two renowned Japanese myriostigma cultivars, Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Hakujo and Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Fukuryu (type B) nudum. Displaying intermediate features of both parents, it inherits the felty line between contiguous areoles from ‘cv. Hakujo’ and the irregular “warts” on the ribs surface from ‘cv. Fukuryu,’ creating a unique raised design on its surface.
Astrophytum myriostigma cv. Hakujo Fukuryu thrives in well-draining soil, abundant sunlight, and minimal water, typical of desert-adapted cacti. However, its lighter coloration may make it more susceptible to sunburn, necessitating protection from intense sunlight. With its variable appearance and availability in several clones, this cultivar is a prized addition to cactus collections, embodying both beauty and cultural significance.
