Gymnocalycium quehlianum is a delightful, small cactus species native to the Córdoba and San Luis provinces of Argentina. Beloved by collectors for its attractive appearance and ease of care, this cactus is perfect for any succulent enthusiast.

Features:

  • Size: Typically grows up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter and 2 inches (5 cm) in height, with a globular, solitary, or clustering habit.
  • Stem: Spherical to slightly flattened stem, dark green to bluish-green in color, featuring 8 to 12 prominent ribs.
  • Spines: Short, curved inward spines, 5 to 7 per areole, ranging from white to pale brown.
  • Flowers: Produces beautiful, funnel-shaped flowers in white, pale pink, or light yellow, emerging from the apex. Flowers can reach up to 1.5 inches (4 cm) in diameter and bloom in late spring to early summer.

Cultivation Tips:

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight but benefits from shading in intense sun to prevent sunburn.
  • Watering: Use the “soak and dry” method. Allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water is more frequent during the growing season (spring and summer), and watering is reduced in winter.
  • Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Create your own mix with regular potting soil combined with coarse sand, perlite, or pumice.
  • Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) during the growing season. Can tolerate temperatures down to 25°F (-4°C) if kept dry.
  • Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or offsets. Sow seeds in a well-draining soil mix and keep moist until germination. Remove and plant offsets in their own pots once they have developed roots.

Care Tips:

  • Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  • Provide good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.
  • Fertilize sparingly during the growing season with a balanced cactus fertilizer.
  • Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and provide room for growth.
