Gymnocalycium anisitsii f. cristata is a fascinating and unique crested form of the Gymnocalycium anisitsii species. This variant is highly sought after by cactus enthusiasts due to its unusual and striking growth pattern. Native to Bolivia and Paraguay, it offers a distinctive visual appeal with its crested, wavy stem structure.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: The crested form tends to grow into a compact, fan-shaped formation rather than the typical globular shape. It can reach up to 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) wide, depending on growing conditions.
  • Stem: The stem is dark green and forms unique, undulating ridges and crests. This crested growth pattern is a result of a mutation that causes the plant to grow in a flattened, fan-like shape.
  • Spines: Spines are short and relatively sparse, usually white to pale brown, emerging from small areoles along the crested ridges.
  • Flowers: Despite its unusual growth, Gymnocalycium anisitsii f. cristata can still produce small, funnel-shaped flowers. These are typically white or pale pink and bloom from the top of the crest.

Cultivation

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but intense midday sun should be avoided to prevent sunburn. A location with filtered sunlight or partial shade is ideal.

Watering: Use the “soak and dry” method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water more frequently during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce watering in the winter months when the cactus is dormant.

Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Adding coarse sand, perlite, or pumice to the soil mix can improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 50°F (10°C) but should be protected from frost.

Propagation: Propagation is typically done through grafting due to the crested form. This helps maintain the unique growth pattern and supports the plant’s health.

Care Tips

  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced cactus fertilizer during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering.
  • Pests and Diseases: Common pests include mealybugs and spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant and maintain good air circulation to prevent infestations.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and provide room for growth. Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Special Notes

  • Crested Growth: The crested form is due to a genetic mutation that alters the typical growth pattern, resulting in a fan-like, wavy structure.
  • Ornamental Value: Gymnocalycium anisitsii f. cristata is highly prized for its unique appearance and is often a centerpiece in cactus collections.
