Gymnocalycium mihanovichii, commonly known as the Chin Cactus, is a small, colorful cactus species native to the Chaco region of Paraguay and parts of Argentina. This cactus is highly prized for its vibrant appearance and is often grown as a grafted plant on other cacti.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: This species is relatively small, typically reaching 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.5 cm) in diameter.
  • Stem: The stem is globular to slightly flattened and comes in various shades of green. There are also many popular cultivars with brightly colored stems in shades of red, orange, yellow, and even pink due to mutations that lack chlorophyll.
  • Ribs: The plant has about 8 to 14 distinct ribs, which are well-defined and have rounded edges.
  • Spines: The spines are usually short and fine, varying in color from white to brownish. They radiate from the areoles along the ribs.
  • Flowers: Gymnocalycium mihanovichii produces small, funnel-shaped flowers that are generally white to pale pink. The flowers bloom in summer and open during the day.

Cultivation

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can cause sunburn, especially for the colorful cultivars. Filtered sunlight is ideal.

Watering: Use the “soak and dry” method. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant is dormant.

Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. You can enhance drainage by adding perlite or pumice to regular cactus soil.

Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 70-85°F (21-29°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate lower temperatures down to 50°F (10°C) but should be protected from frost.

Propagation: Gymnocalycium mihanovichii can be propagated from offsets (pups) that grow around the base of the mother plant. These can be carefully removed and planted separately. The colored varieties are often grafted onto rootstock like Hylocereus spp. to thrive since they lack chlorophyll.

Care Tips

  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced cactus fertilizer during the growing season, diluted to half strength.
  • Pests and Diseases: Watch for common pests such as mealybugs and spider mites. Maintain good air circulation to prevent fungal infections.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in fresh cactus soil to provide adequate nutrients and room for growth. Handle carefully to avoid damaging the delicate roots.

Special Notes

  • Common Names: Besides the Chin Cactus, this species is sometimes referred to by names reflecting its appearance, such as the Moon Cactus when grafted.
