Gymnocalycium quehlianum is a charming and compact cactus species native to the Córdoba and San Luis provinces of Argentina. It is highly prized by collectors for its attractive appearance, easy cultivation, and beautiful flowers.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: This small cactus typically grows up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in diameter and about 2 inches (5 cm) in height.
  • Stem: The stem is spherical to slightly flattened and comes in a dark green to bluish-green color. It features 8 to 12 prominent ribs that are well-defined and often have a slightly tuberculate texture.
  • Spines: Each areole generally bears 5 to 7 short, curved spines that range in color from white to pale brown. These spines are typically more delicate and less prominent than those of other cactus species.
  • Flowers: Gymnocalycium quehlianum produces beautiful, funnel-shaped flowers that are white, pale pink, or light yellow. The flowers can reach up to 1.5 inches (4 cm) in diameter and usually bloom in late spring to early summer, emerging from the apex of the cactus.

Cultivation

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but intense midday sun should be avoided to prevent sunburn. Ideal locations include windowsills with filtered light or areas with partial shade.

Watering: Use the “soak and dry” method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water more frequently during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce watering in the winter months when the cactus is dormant.

Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. A suitable mix can be made by combining regular potting soil with coarse sand, perlite, or pumice to ensure good drainage and aeration.

Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 25°F (-4°C) if kept dry, but should be protected from frost.

Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or offsets. Sow seeds in a well-draining soil mix and keep them moist until germination. Offsets can be removed from the mother plant once they have developed roots and planted separately.

Care Tips

  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced cactus fertilizer during the growing season to promote healthy growth and flowering.
  • Pests and Diseases: Watch for common pests such as mealybugs and spider mites. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal infections and other diseases.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years to refresh the soil and provide room for growth. Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Special Notes

  • Flowering: While Gymnocalycium quehlianum flowers relatively easily under the right conditions, the flowers are usually short-lived, opening during the day and closing at night.
  • Collection Value: This species is popular among cactus enthusiasts due to its manageable size, attractive appearance, and ease of care, making it a perfect addition to any succulent collection.
