Gymnocalycium anisitsii, also known as the “Chin Cactus,” is a species native to Bolivia and Paraguay. The variegated form of this cactus is particularly prized for its striking appearance, featuring a mix of green and creamy yellow or white patches on the stem. This variegation is due to a mutation that affects the chlorophyll in the plant, giving it a unique and eye-catching look.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Typically grows to about 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) in diameter and can reach up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in height.
  • Stem: The stem is globular to slightly flattened, with pronounced ribs. The variegated form showcases an intriguing mix of green with creamy yellow or white patches, creating a marbled effect.
  • Spines: The cactus has clusters of short, curved spines that are usually whitish to pale brown, adding to its decorative appeal.
  • Flowers: Gymnocalycium anisitsii produces small, funnel-shaped flowers that are usually white or pale pink. The flowers typically bloom in late spring to early summer.

Cultivation

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, especially for variegated plants, as the lighter parts of the cactus can burn more easily. Filtered light or partial shade is ideal.

Watering: Use the “soak and dry” method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water more frequently during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce watering in the winter months when the cactus is dormant.

Soil: Requires a well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Enhancing the soil with coarse sand, perlite, or pumice can help improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 50°F (10°C), but should be protected from frost.

Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or offsets. Variegated plants can sometimes revert to their non-variegated form, so propagation should be done with care to maintain the variegation.

Care Tips

  • Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced cactus fertilizer during the growing season to support healthy growth and flowering.
  • Pests and Diseases: Common pests include mealybugs and spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant and maintain good air circulation to prevent infestations.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years in fresh cactus soil to provide adequate nutrients and room for growth. Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

Special Notes

  • Variegation: The variegated form of Gymnocalycium anisitsii is highly sought after due to its unique and attractive appearance. However, variegated cacti may grow slower than their fully green counterparts and can be more sensitive to environmental conditions.
  • Flowering: While the variegated form may flower less frequently than the non-variegated form, the flowers are just as beautiful and add an extra layer of charm to this already stunning plant.
