Gymnocalycium stenopleurum is a small, attractive cactus species native to Paraguay and northern Argentina. It is well-loved by cactus enthusiasts for its beautiful, ribbed body and striking flowers. This cactus is a member of the Gymnocalycium genus, known for its ease of care and distinctive appearance.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Gymnocalycium stenopleurum typically grows to about 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) in diameter and up to 3 inches (7.5 cm) in height.
  • Stem: The stem is globular to slightly flattened, dark green to grayish-green, and has about 8-14 prominent ribs that are rounded and slightly tuberculate.
  • Spines: Each areole usually bears 5-7 short, radial spines that are whitish to pale brown. These spines are relatively short, often not exceeding 0.4 inches (1 cm) in length, and tend to curve towards the stem.
  • Flowers: Gymnocalycium stenopleurum produces large, funnel-shaped flowers that are typically white to pale pink with a darker pink throat. The flowers can reach up to 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter and bloom in late spring to early summer.

Cultivation

Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, but intense midday sun should be avoided to prevent sunburn. A location with filtered sunlight or partial shade is ideal.

Watering: Use the “soak and dry” method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water more frequently during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce watering in the winter months when the cactus is dormant.

Soil: Requires well-draining soil, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Adding coarse sand, perlite, or pumice to the soil mix can improve drainage and prevent root rot.

Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to 25°F (-4°C) if kept dry, but should be protected from frost.

Propagation: Can be propagated from seeds or offsets. Seeds should be sown in a well-draining soil mix and kept moist until germination. Offsets can be carefully removed from the mother plant and planted separately.
